How will Harry Potter End?

Keith Olbermann's Harry Potter spoiler

Warning: Stop reading now if you don't want to know the ending!

Harry, Ron and Hermione enter a diner. They order Butter Beer and onion rings. Voldemort is sitting at the lunch counter, marking time. Outside, Ron’s sister, Ginny, is having a hell of a time parallel parking, even though she’s using her wand. And just then the door to the diner opens and Harry Potter looks up and—the last 11 pages of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” are freaking blank.

Training....

So this time I'm going to do it! After a week of injury during my last half marathon training I pretty much gave up on it. Not having a goal, a place where I want to get to, doesn't get me going. This time I got a new approach to it. I'm doing a 12 week 5K training, starting from zero. My body feels great after just a week of getting back on track... so staying positive... I'm keeping it up!

Now, I just have to work on my coffee adiction....

So, I went to the MO Humane Society on Wednesday, Apr 8 to pick up an application. They were about to close, but when I walked in and saw this beautiful black tabby kitten I couldn't resist. I played with him for a while and decided to come the next morning to adopt. So, I'm officially the mother of a 2 month and 6 day old kitten named Coquí Molina. After much deliberation (thanks everyone for their suggestions) the name came about during dinner tonight when Julia suggested 'coquí'. Molina was Ryan's idea.

Coquí (pronounced Koki) is the common name for several species of small frogs endemic to the archipelago of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, onomatopoeically named for the loud sound (sometimes reaching as high as 100 dB) the males make at night. There are 17 described species of coquís in Puerto Rico. The last one was discovered in 2005 and was named Coquí Llanero.

Molina is for Yadier Molina, the catcher for the St. Louis Cardinal's who is from Bayamón, PR - the same city I'm from. Ryan and I met him during the Winter League games in PR last December.

I chose the name because I wanted the kitten's name to remind me of home and some of the amazing experiences I've had in St. Louis this past year.

Anyway, I'm excited and I wanted to share!

A Portrait

Hello all!
My friend Leslie is an artist. Last week we got together and I posed for her. She took a bunch of pictures of me. It was really weird because I had never done anything remotely related to posing for a painting, or modeling for that matter. But I'm really excited to be part of this project. To inspire someone to do work and then to see myself through their eyes is really cool. So, here's the link to her website were you can see some of her work and the first sketch she's done of me: http://www.lesliereuther.com/news/

Bombón, el cachorrito afortunado: 1995-2007

In March of 1995 my grandfather arrived to my house with the great news that a dog had given birth to a few puppies at his TV repair business. I was exited. I wanted one. We went to visit the business and fell in love with the puppies. But there was one that stood out for us. The tiniest puppy of all. It could fit in the front pocket of my shirt. smaller than the palm of your hand. The mother had walked in from the street one night and gave birth inside a TV, and this tiny pup was cover in some kind of TV grease. We cleaned it and agreed to pick it up in a few weeks, when it would be strong enough to leave the mother and come home.

I spent days thinking of names, one with every letter of the alphabet. At the time I was obsessed with my Disney enciclopedia, which included a set of short stories. My favorite: Bombón, el cachorrito afortunado... That means the lucky puppy... and considering the circumstances the name seeed appropriate. So with my neighboors we wrote a play and a song for the dog that we would premier the wonderful day we would welcom Bombón to our house.

Bombón arrived to our house inside a brown sandwish bag. My grandfather, Pipa got a ride from someone at work and brought it home. The dog was still small. Only 28 days old. The skin was damaged from the grease and he had lost most of the hair. The day after he arrived, my neighboor bought a tiny bunny. Same color as Bombi. We would put them togheter and they would snuggle together. I had to take care of Bombi like a baby. Bathing and feeding him until it got healthy.

Somehow, I can't determine when, the tiny & sweet puppy with ears fallent infront of his face, transforred into a growling but loyal, still tiny and now the ears stood up all the time. Yeah, Bombi was a growler... and his name didnt suit him so much anymore. But he was loyal. And he loved my family... and with some persitance he would open up to anyone that would try a little harder.

Bombi had a great life, but also gave us a couple of scares. One day we found him and he was very weak and shaking. And he was not growling. That was a clear sign something was wrong. This went on for hours, so we took him to the emergency vet. We found out he had been poisoned. I spent all my savings to save his life that day... And he was back to normal pretty soon. A few years after that, Bombi decided that my neighboors pitbull would be a good fit for mating.... That morning I woke up to the screams of dogs and people. The pitbull had attacked bombi on the neck. I jumped from my bed, ran outside and saw him on the floor, all bloody, and motionless. He was in a place closed by a fence and I couldn't reach him. Tearfully I cried his name and he got up and ran towards me. I grabbed him and took him to the sink to wash away the blood. I couldt get myself to do it. All his skin was broken and you could see everything inside. I wrapped him in a towel and my dad drove us to the vet. He spent almost a month there. And then had this colloar on his neck for another couple of months while the would healed.

Oh Bombi was also a star.... You may have seen him in the Taco Bell commercial and in Legally Blond. Yes, that was my Bombi. That's the Bombi I left in Puerto Rico when I came to study at WashU. The Bombi that waited for my return every summer and every winter break. The Bombi that will scracth my legs under the dinner table waiting for some piece of chicken or meat, that slept with me every night... Yeah it was a dog, but I miss it terribly...

All dogs go to heaven, and now his up there, reunited with Pipa y Añy.

The injustice of justice.

So, yeasterday after spending 40 minutes in traffice to get my HPV vaccine, I'm driving back to RCIA on highway 40, overly conscious of my speed. I'm thinking how absurd it is to have a speed limit of 55 here and how hard it is to stay there when no other cars are around. I take an exit and stopped thinking about the speed. My mind went somewhere else in the universe as I watched middeschool kids playing baseball. I almost missed a stop. I'm thinking damn, I could have killed myself or gotteng a ticket for that. But as soon as I hit the gas again, my mind wonders to that other universe again, this time as I watch a woman wearing pj pants ant a tanktop walk across the hospital sidewalk. I notice a 'Stop for pedestrian' sign, but there's no pedestrians so I continue my journey... just to hear a siren go off behind me. I was ready to say, wait.. there was no pedestrian why would I STOP... but as I roll down my window... the cop is talking on his walkie describing me and my car. It didnt feel right hearing him use numbers to describe my offense and describing my physical appearence to someone on the other side with so much enthusiasm, as if he had just caught a 'most wanted' criminal. He quickly says i was going 14 miles over the limit, 34 on 20. And asked me to drive to the other side of the road. I gave him my liscence and drove to were to I was directed. A few minutes later, I got all the ticket instruction, and teary eyed (did I mentioned I was not driving my car!) I continued my journey to CHURCH! I'm waiting for the green light (arrow to turn left) and as soon as it turns, this guy comes from the opposite direction, running over a red light and almost hitting me in the process. I think of the irony, how I never put anyone life but mine in danger, while this dude could have killed me seconds later... Where was the police officer then?

It is frustrating. Law punshing people for harmless ofenses... I admit my fault in that I was driving but I was not really present in the moment, and that's potentially harmful - but it is much easier and less risky to have cops driving around monitoring speed in the washinton university neighborhood... But who can blame them... after all, thats how they get the money...

Confirmation....

Last Saturday night, during Easter Vigil, Ryan got confirmed and I was his sponsor. It was very special to be part of this moment... my own confirmation taking a new meaning. We had been preparing for this moment for about 8 months, with meetings every Tuesday night. The meetings were very good. Every Tuesday we would discuss the readings for Sunday. That was one of my favorite parts, because I actually took the time to reflect on the Word. I participated more actively at Mass. I also enjoyed the themes that make me question my faith, which makes me closer to it... It helped me to reach peace with my religious beliefs. RCIA also gave me peace when my grandmother died. RCIA gave me the opportunity to live some amazing experiences... like going to the Basilica and meeting the Archbishop... Although we have a couple of meetings left, I'm going to miss Tuesday nights of Del Taco, Half-prized appetizers, Soup, Bake Goodies... and Gym =).

The best part was being able to share everything with some of the most important people in my life... my chosen family in St. Louis... Ryan, Jose & Denise. The process definately brought us all closer together. We had great discussions of faith. And even though some times we felt that we were going to be kicked out of the Church, I believe that our spirituality and faith has grown a lot in the process... and the best part is that it sparked some new questions that we still continue to explore. I got to know Ryan in a different way, and I'm glad we will forever share this bond. In some way it makes our relationship holy- beyond being a couple it is about striving for a closer relationship with God. And in that search for a connection with God, I can say with great happiness that I feel closer and more in love with Ryan than ever before.

Saturday was a very special day. We began the day with prayer and practice. It was a nice way to get started. Then, we got together for dinner at Ryan's with his family, Jose, Denise, & my mom!!!!!! The mass was beautiful... an interesting perspective to be part of the rite. Everyone was so happy. Of course, there were plenty of reasons for it.

I think back to my own confirmation. I wish I had a similar opportunity. I got confirmed with my class in 11th grade and at the time I had a different perspective of my religion and didnt really care or understood what I was doing. But I guess that's how God works... Even though when some peope are not even aware of what is happening when getting baptized, confirmed, ect. once you receive Jesus in your life, the Holy Spirit works in unexplicable ways. I'm blessed to have had this opportunity and for the people that shared it with me.

Vacation in Florida

So, Ryan and I took off last Thursday and spent a few days in Florida. One thing I love about our relationship is that we are always getting around... we've traveled a few times together... roadtrips to DC, Chicago a couple of times, Puerto Rico... I love that we move around because every trip is an experience filled with so many memories and moments that brings us closer.

Anyway, Florida was amazing. It was the ultimate vacation, filled with so many adventures. We went to Tampa bay, and stayed with Janaki in Clearwater. Of course we went to the beach. Caradesi Island is absolutely beautiful. To get there you take a Ferry from Honeymoon Island. Actually both island were just one until the turn of the century when a hurricane divided it into two. When you arrive at the Caradesi bay, you can take a walk to the beach throuh a nature trail... I didnt get to explore the nature part too much, but apparently there's a lot of interesting fauna and flora there... The beach is beautiful. There are so many seashells of every color, shape, and form... The water is crystal clear blue and the sand is soft and white. Back in Honeymoon Island you can find a beach very similar to this one, but much more croweded. Honeymoon island also has some trails and a very nice spot to watch the sunset. Water sports are a hit in both places... I can't wait to go back... someday

We also went to Crystal River... This places is a manatee reserve, although we didnt get to see any. It was very pretty too. We rented a pantoon boat and drove to this area were there are a couple of natural underground springs. It was a little sketchy to get there but it was truly a beautiful place. All the trees surrounding a pool of beautiful clear water. Heaven on earth. I wish I had taken pictures...

There was also Busch Gardens... This one rollercoster had a 90 degree 200ft fall.. and when it got to the top it would turn the car facing down and hold you there for a few seconds.. a thrill. Oddly enough, that one didn't make me dizzy, while the wood oldfashined coaster was the one that made me sick. To get to this park, we got passes that my uncle had bought a few years ago. We were not sure they still worked, but they did.... at least two of them. So it was a very cheap trip to Busch Gardens...

Speaking of great deals, we went to the Havana Cafe and when they got the check I jokingly asked for the Cuban Discount. They actually gave me my meal for free! I couldn't believe it!

It was also great to see Janaki and get our mudslides....

Ohh, I'm going to be thinking back to this trip for a while...

Life

Last night, Ryan's sister Jill had a baby girl. It was an amazing experience to be part of this moment.

I've been very lucky to be feel welcomed in Ryan's family from the beginning. Coming from a Puerto Rican family, I'm used to feel the warmth of a home, the smell of something delicious always cooking in the kitchen, and the sometimes overwhelming presence of every family member in the decision making process. I miss that. And luckily, for the past year I have been able to witness that warmth with Ryan's family.

My best friend in PR, Jo Ann, had her first daughter a couple of years ago. It was exciting but I didn't have the opportunity to be there for most of the process. So it was the first time that someone close to me was preparing to give birth. The whole process was very exciting, and the anticipation to meet baby Ava grew in everyone each day.

When Brian, Jill's husband, came out to the waiting area to let us come in... and then when we entered the room where Jill was lying in bed holding the baby... it was magical. A true miracle had happened and it was hard to contain the tears of jot. At this point I felt a little like I wasn't supposed to be there because I was not part of the family. So I backed up a little and this gave me the opportunity to watch everyone in the room embracing the moment in their own way. Ryan's dad was specially amusing. It was just great to watch the family welcome a new member with so much love. And Baby Ava is just beautiful! So alert and welcoming every touch and kiss. Letting everyone carry her and take pictures. So much beauty, peace, love....

And it was cool to watch Ryan react to all this. At first, almost not knowing what his role was in the whole situation. His sister had asked to go pick up their dog when the time came. That was a hilarious moment... Bc if you knew Audrey (the dog)... she's special. I was amused by listening to him talk to his dad as we waited in ths hospital. And then the smile on his face when he first saw Ava. And when he finally got the courage to hold hold her. And I got the chance to hold her too! I had never seen a baby so small and I was scared but some how it made me feel safe.

It's exciting!

Miscselaneous

St. Louis has decided that it will only have sunny days from Monday to Friday, when the working force cannot enjoy them. Oh Well. So I started my weekend Friday night with an almost two mile run on a treadmill. Last week, after a 6-mile run at forest park i hurt my foot an was unable to run all week. On Friday I decided I was ready, but I could barely make it through 1 mile... Thankfully all the news stations at the time, where showing clips of Anna Nicole's trial. Who will get custody of baby? Who is the father? Where will her body be put to rest? I think that Angelina Jolie should step up and adopt the baby girl.

Britney Spears went into rehab again, for the third time... I fear she's in the same road Anna Nicole took in her life. Hopefully I am wrong and Britney can come back as the face of soberness....

Saturday night a group got together for game night. It was so much fun. Another friend who is also training for the marathon told me how he was hurt the same day I was. His symptoms were pretty much the same as mine. He went to the doctor, got X-rays, and was diagnosed with a Stress Fracture. Great! Just Great! I get to 6 miles... 1/4 of a marathon! and I get a stress fracture!!! There goes my marathon dream. Maybe I'll do a relay. I want to bring a medal home!

We celebrated the Rite of Election on Sunday, with a Liturgy at the Basilica. It was cool. The Archbishop is cool. And to my pleasant surprise, they were bilingual. I tuned out for half of the homily, and then he summarized everything he had said in Spanish. Yey!

The Oscars. Was Ryan the only one disappointed that they didn't include Anna Nicole Smith on the video of everyone that died this past year? Did you stopped what you were doing when Al Gore almost announced he was running for the 08 elections? Did you cringe when Ellen insinuated that Penelope Cruz was from Mexico? I thing they didn't use Ellen enough. Abigail Breslin and Jaden Smith were adorable. I was a little dissapointed by the winners and my favorite part was the special awards. Do you thing Peter O'Toole will make it to anothe Oscar or will he receive a special award? The best musical performance goes to Jack Black and Will
Ferrel. They should host the Oscars next year. And I loved the contortionist troup. In fact, I taped the show and rewind after it was over to see them do everything all over again.

Lent and Marriage

The title to my blog today may seem weird... am I talking about marriage as a form of torture? Considering I have no experience on the subject, the answer is no. I'm just going to share with you some thoughts about last night's RCIA meeting.

Today is Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of the season of Lent. You'd be surprised to know that Lent means Spring. It is a time of changing of seasons, and if you are in the Midwest, this may be a little rough. Lent is the "season for winter hearts to melt." And last night we were given three words to describe it: prayer, fasting & almsgiving. Prayer as in developing your relationship with God and the people around you; Fasting as a way to make a spiritual connection with the less fortunate and Jesus in the dessert; and Almsgiving as a way to stretch our resources.

People always talk about giving something up for Lent. Lent is a season of Fasting and Feasting. It's not only what you do not do, but what you do. It is about change. A suggestion is to look into the following 5 aspects and come up with things to improve (From a magazine called 'America'):
1. Interiority: who you are when you are not filled with noise?
2. Intimacy: build relationship with someone you care.
3. Solidarity: make a public stand with an issue of justice.
4. Simplicity: give away
5. The Marginal: walk humbly into the life of the handicapped, terminally ill, ect.

Marriage is also a time of change. And it is considered a sacrament because if you think about it, every sacrament brings to the person some kind of change in their life. So in that sense it is similar to Lent. Lent is also a commitment to become better. Marriage is a commitment to another person. But one thing is different. Lent is only 40 days, and sometimes that commitment ends on Easter. But marriage is forever. Any of you have thought about living with your boyfriend/girlfriend? Here's a thought: "You cannot practice permanency." Just something to think about.

Climate Crisis

So, I decided to take a more serious look at Global Warming. And I finally watched inconvenient truth on Sunday evening. I must say I was dissapointed by the portrayal of Al Gore's dramatic life and the lack of facts regarding the issue. I was expecting something more like March of the Penguins and got a slightly political & biographical documentary. The movie left me with more questions than answers because they would throw a random fact and then go on about Al Gore's friend dying of cancer. And I really wanted to know what tragedy Winston Churchill warned the English people about. And when the asian girl asked Gore what are the things we can do to help he gave an allegorical answer. The film crew decided that it would be better to inlcude the 'what we can do' section in microfont and alternated with the credits. This was boring and hard to read. And don't even try to make me believe that Al Gore did the powerpoint on his own.

I believe something has to be done and than everyone can contribute to decrease pollution. In the movie they said that 40% of the world population drinks mineral water... what does the other 60% drink? Some fraction of that percentage would be people that drink purified ocean water, but most of it would be people that do not have access to clean water. THAT IS A PROBLEM. And I think we should not only focus on what we can do to prevent a crisis, but on WHAT WE CAN DO NOW to deal with our current crisis.

I have a headache now so I'm not going to get more into this. But I'll try to continue to get informed about stuff and posting more blogs about the topic.

Hiccuping??????????????

A Florida females makes the news once more:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Jennifer Mee can't stop hiccuping. For more than three weeks now, the 15-year-old St. Petersburg teen has hiccuped close to 50 times a minute — despite the best efforts of doctors and home remedies.

She's had blood tests, a CT scan and an MRI. Drugs haven't worked. Neither has holding her breath, putting sugar under her tongue, sipping pickle juice, breathing into a paper bag and drinking out of the wrong side of a glass.

And, yes, people have tried to scare them out of her.

The hiccups do stop when she's sleeping.

According to the National Institutes of Health, hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, which causes vocal cords to briefly close, which makes that distinctive hiccup sound. They can start for no reason or be triggered by anything from spicy foods to stress.
It is not clear what triggered Jennifer's hiccups, which started in school Jan. 23. Her mother, Rachel Robidoux, recently turned to the local newspaper for help.

"I'm just looking for some answers where somebody's gone through this," Robidoux told the St. Petersburg Times. "At this point, we're willing to do anything."

What do you think is causing this hilarious avalanche of tall tales from Florida women????

Security

I park on a residential area, and to get to my lab from there, I must cross a bridge over 64/40 and pass a . I've always been a little hesitant about this, since usually, when I leave work, it is after dark. However, this is saving me about $300 in parking/month. Is it worth it?

On Feb. 12 a girl was sexually assaulted at a WashU Dorm. Below is the Crime alert. If you click on the image it will be clear.

This story hits us close to home and I feel the need to create awareness about it. I am so proud of this girl for reporting the assault. She's one strong woman. Lets pray to God to give her more strenght as she continues her life. And hopefully we all can learn a lesson about this.

Last Week

So I'm training for the half marathon and until last week it was great. Not easy but every run made me feel better about myself. Last week, however, was terrible. I felt very unmotivated. Yesterday I ran 5 miles on Forest Park. It was my first run outside and it was great. I really enjoyed it and the feeling of actually getting somewhere really helped. So I'm starting this week with a high. I blame Anna Nicole's death and Nisa Nowak for my bad week. Seriously.. wassup with Florida and all the women making crazy news down there??? Perhaps it is Global Warming.

On the Super Bowl

For this 22 year old Puerto Rican woman living in St. Louis watching the Super Bowl for the first time, it was actually a very interesting time...

Lets start by the location.... I ended up watching the game at the house of the 3rd generation of the Pulitzer family in St. Louis... Pulitzer as the Pulitzer prize. When I arrived to the house in Ladue, there were a couple of sculptures in the front yard... and a Picaso decorated the wall to the left of the TV. So it was a little overwhelming and for the first five minutes there I didn't know what I should be looking at: the game or the art.

I arrived a little late and missed the National Anthem and Jessica Simpson's declaration of love to Pizza Hut, and Chicago's 1st Touchdown. Oh yeah, after carefull consideration I decided I wanted the Colts to win... My reasoning: the only game I had seen before this was at ND.. and that's in Indiana. =) So, I was a little disappointed when they didn't get the first field goal.

Chicago kept the lead with another touchdown, but thanks do Oprah and David Letterman, the disappointment didn't last long. I learned what a turnover is, and absorbed the energy of watching the first game with 4 turnovers in the first quarter. Was the purple rain to blame for this historic moment?

Then there was that heart commercial... Who was the first person that came to your mind when you saw this?

Anyway, the Colts took the lead and I was happy. Then there was halftime. The only thing that came off was Prince's headscarf... Thank goodness! BTW, what a waste of money! And I cannot believe those dancers didn't slip... Now that the game is on break, I'm going to speak about all the food that we had at this place. Every dip you can imagine, Chili, & brownies and cookies! Super Bowl=Yummy Food!

Coca Cola loses points for not coming up with a new commercial for the Super Bowl. And just when I was wondering were K-Fed was, he shows up laughing at himself. I liked the Budweiser commercials during Baseball season better than the ones they had for the Super Bowl. And I still have no idea what GoDaddy.com is. AND where was that guy proposing to his wife????

Anyway, the Colts kept the lead the rest of the game. My favorite moment was when that guy intercepted the bowl and almost touched the line. And the Bear's sad attempt to question the amazing play.

So I'm a little bit more acquainted with the game of football now... Still, my favorite part was all the computer graphics on the screen. And finally an African American coach leads a team to Super Bowl victory... OR may I say, it is 2007 and it is the first time an African American coach leads a team to Super Bowl victory!!! What is wrong with us!!! I bet Hollywood is already working the contract to make a movie about this...

News Recap!

Today I feel like a celebrity blogger... or perhaps more like writing an editorial of editorials....

My day has been full of hilarious moments, all given by interactive webpages that deliver the news daily to us.

I'm not very up-to-date with the world news, but I do know that this week the Eifel tower turned off all its lights for 5 minutes to commemorate the eve of a report made by UN scientits concerning Global Warming. The result of this report: the probablity that Global Warming is here and caused by us humans: 90%! Now, I'm sure that was reduced after the Eifel's tower demonstration. But what's even better about this is how different newsrooms cover the story... There are the straight forward people like Times & CNN who bombarded their stories with facts and figures, while others thought that using metaphors of urban legends and murdered honor roll students a better way to cover the story.... and others even went beyond that and accused Bush's of hiring a bunch of scientists to say that the UN report is full of bull... I thought all of it was funny...

American women made the news bigtime today... One just a few miles away, fell into the Mississipi river over by the River Boats... Some people heard her screaming, but when they tried to save her she was stuck... Firefighters came to the rescue and she was saved around 10am this morning. Another woman, in St. Petersburg, FL faked her own death after 11 months of faking her cancer treatment... How did people find out? She showed up at her funeral. But she was not arrested, she did not commit a crime! I wonder if anyone will show up when she actually dies...

Maybe global warming is affecting women more than the moon these days... who knows!

Finally... ew.com.. An ode to you! Thank you! You make my favorite shows even better!
