Picture of the Week

I found a photo essay in TIME that shows pictures of what's on family dinner tables in fifteen different homes around the globe. It includes a photo of the family in the kitchen, surrounded by all the food they consume in a week, and detail on how much it costs. It is pretty interesting. Below is a picture from a family in Ecuador. I can identify with the food they eat. For them it costs only about $30, for my family in PR a grocery list like this would cost close to $150.If you want to see the complete essay, titled WHat teh World Eats, click here.

Picture of the week

I've spent a lot of time this week taking black and white high resolution photographs in a scanning electron microscope.... so when I came across Jacob Cass' blog compiling 56 Awe Inspiring Creating Photographs I was, well.. awe inspired.

Here's one of my favorites: Apple Genes Spliced by bonkrissybon.

Picture of the Week

I know I just posted an image last night.. but today I cannot resist to share this image from the blog 3191. Steph and Mav live 3191 miles apart. They've never met. Last year they started the 3191 blog, where they each posted a picture taken in the morning. This year they post pictures taken at night. I am always impressed by the parallelisms between the images. And this is one, posted last night, is one of my favorites. Seems like I have a small obsession with lines in photography. I had the great experience of interviewing both of them for my photography class last year. Check out the transcript of that interview here.

I got this image from flickr user tarotastic. It is entitled Canton Trade Fair 2. I love the feeling of the never ending lines, the light... I strongly recommend you click here to see the bigger version and more work but this awesome photographer.

Picture of the Week

While I was very tempted to use this picture of Miley Cirus and comment on how the "gossip pages have taken yet another a huge step towards ensuring that the South Park 'Sacrificial Celebrity Theory' comes true in real life." The girl even had to cancel a charity event to avoid the media attention! "Sorry this country is insane" (ok, i took all that form Best Week Ever. Subscribe to their blog, it is hilarious.)

Anyway, this week I was very impressed again by Sam Javanrough and a pair of pictures he posted on his blog daily dose of imagry: a panoramic view of Dundas Square in Toronto. Enjoy.

The interactive panorama can be viewed at viewAt.

Picture of the week

This week's picture is almost like a satire for the ridiculously high gas prices. The picture was taken by Sam Javenroug's blog daily dose of imagery. The photo was taken on a streetcar on King street.

I was discussing in class the other day about the importance of industrial biotechnology in the development of alternative fuels & energy sources. The more I think about it, this next source of energy won't be in the traditional form of a liquid oil... Prove of concept wont be hard. The majority of the investments will be to change our entire planet's infrastructure... from oil pipelines, to car design, to power plants... The energy crisis is a global crisis.... And before all the leaders of the world make a decision on what will be our next source... I don't even want to theorize on what can happen. Any thoughts?

Picture of the Week

This week I'm sharing a very nice picture I found on a reddit link a few days ago. The pictures was taken by Dan Bush on February 06 in northern Missouri at sunset. It was taken using a fisheye lense. Isn't it beautiful? I have not seen a rainbow in a very long time! And I have never seen a full rainbow like this before! For more pictures of the tree and the rainbow by Dan Bush click here.

Picture of the Week

The picture of the week is from last Sunday's PostSecret. Ok, I am not posting this for the photographic quality - but mainly for the feelings it provokes in me. It really hurts me to see the phrase: "People who live in the United States and don't bother to speak English make me sick" next to a bunch of Puerto Rican flags. The best way I can think of to best express everything that bothers me about this image is to enumerate them:

1. Why did the person that wrote this PostSecret chose a picture of Puerto Rican flags to express his feelings? I am pretty sure that there are more than one person from every other country in the world that has not learned English in this country. Is it really their fault? And if this is such a big problem.. why not do something about it?
2. I hate the assumption... That every Puerto Rican in the mainland does not know English. FYI, English has been the second official language of the island since 1993. English is a compulsory second language taught at schools and it is used in business, research, industry, and education. I am Puerto Rican, born and raised in the island. I cannot remember a time in my life where I did not know English. And I learned it the same way it is taught in American schools, no spanish/english translations.
3. And how many Americans travel/move every year to foreign countries without bothering to learn the native language either.
4. What probably hurts me the most is that, for a fact I know that many people live to the stereotype expressed in this PostSecret.
5. I am angered by some Americans' inability to accept other languages. I feel it has forgotten through history that this country, the land of the free, was born and conceived by immigrants searching for a better life, a better future. Those are the real roots of this country. There are bigger more important things to worry about in this country right now.
6. And I have done it all over this blog, but the US calling itself America is a little silly. This sign at Geno's Steaks in Philadelphia, tells customers, "This is America: WHEN ORDERING 'PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH.'" There are 22 countries in America. In 19 of these countries Romance Languages, primarily Spanish and Portuguese, are primarily spoken.

The world does not revolve around a single nation or a single language. I believe in the value and importance of a multilingual society. I believe it is important to adapt to your new environment and country of residence. Uneducated generalizations and assumptions bother me more than anything.

I found this other picture on a link on reddit.com. Oh so many ironies. Not only the forgot the "p", but as noted by one of the people on the message board where I found this, note the mayor's name. Definitely an immigrant.

Picture of week...

I think I may just start a picture of the week section... Lets see how that goes!

I found the first picture on a slide show at stltoday about this week's rains in the Missouri/Illinois region. My boss was asking me today about a FedEx package we are expecting.... I think now I know where it is! The guy that took this picture got really lucky. I love the composition and it just gives me so much hope. How it is much more important to help other people, no matter how many deadlines you have to meet. In the end, this is what really counts, this is what we will remember and what we will be remembered for.
