This is why I am voting for Barak Obama

On Saturday September 6th, I wrote about my disapproval of Sarah Palin as the republican VP pick. Now I have do admit that thanks to Sarah Palin I got involved in this election. If it wasn’t for my interest in finding out who she is and what she thinks I would have never spent so much time on the internet informing myself about the issues of this election and about the candidates.

I don’t agree with most of McCain’s political views because I think his politics are too influenced by personal moral values. Also, in my understanding, a good leader is able to identify the moment when they are no longer indispensable and move to the side to let a new generation of leaders take over. I also think that this country needs a good motivator, a pushing force to bring it back to its glory again. And McCain has not proven to me that he can move the masses. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager said: “This election is not about issues”. And that is exactly what I see in McCain. A guy who will call a press conference to discuss pigs with lipstick but does not bother to call a press conference to discuss what we are going to do about the rising unemployment rates.

Obama, on the other hand, seemed to have charisma. And during the course of the primaries he managed to surprise all of us with his win. But I was worried that this country would be disappointed by him. He promises to raise the minimum wage, reduce taxes for 95% of the population, affordable health care for all, and tax incentives to reduce energy consumption and encourage alternative energy resources. He talks about everything he is going to do. But realistically how much can he do in 4 years?

Then I heard him say: “words mean something.” And at that moment on Monday, September 8, I decided I was going to vote for him. Obama is a smart man that loves his country and will do everything in his power to improve it. And his conviction is admirable. He can speak to a crowd and inspire them. He realizes that one man alone cannot bring change to this country, but that each of us has to contribute to make that change happen. I strongly believe Barak Obama will inspire this country to make positive change happen and to be positive change for our nation.

I still do not agree with all of Obama’s political positions. But I do agree with him in that we have real problems in this country right now that need viable solutions. Election Day is less than two months away. Let’s set aside the distractions and get informed. It’s hard work. And the media does not help. As humans beings we are gullible to fear and misinformation. But it is our duty as citizens of this country to demand answers. To demand truth. “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The evolution of my feelings about Sarah Palin

When Barak Obama announced Joe Biden as his VP pick, I was a little disappointed. Not because of Biden's qualification but because of the almost universal hope of seeing an Obama-Clinton ticket at this year's election. I was disappointed that he chose a much older and experience counterpart, a move that challenged republicans. I felt Obama was telling them: 'whats going to be your argument against me now?'

And the Republicans had it. The secret weapon: Sarah Palin. A woman that until August 29, 2008 only 683,478 people knew (683,478 is the population of Alaska, that translates to 0.2% of the US population). Bold move. Now John was telling Obama, "I don't discriminate against women and I chose one to join my ticket." I was pleasantly surprised by McCain's announcement. I was excited to get to know her. But before I was able to google her, I had the opportunity to actually go listen to her in O'Fallon, MO at a republican rally. The rally was ok. Lots of country music and low caliber politicians talking about how terrible Obama is. They also explained that the reason America needs to continue digging for oil because we NEED the space and security of large SUVs and minivans (puke). But after 4 hours of waiting in line, melting in the heat, and listening to nonsense, McCain and Palin made their appearance. They spoke briefly and to the point, thanking the crowd, telling us who they were and what we could expect from them. I was happy to know that the candidates didn't waste their time on any bs or trash talk.

And then I get home and all over the internet there's speculation about Palin's youngest son actually being her grandson. I dismissed all this. She didn't. And felt obliged to announce publicly the pregnancy of her 17yo daughter. This part was a little shocking. But like Obama said, being one of the few to publicly defend Palin on the issue, her daughter's pregnancy has nothing to do with Palin's ability to govern a country.

So now was time to find out about this woman's experience and political positions.
*She's pro-life. Awesome!
*But she supports abstinence-only education. Our first disagreement. But I'm sure she bases her stance on her family's own experience. I have nothing but respect for people that abstain from sex, but in my opinion abstinence is unrealistic and idealistic when it comes to large numbers of people. I also think that abstinence is more a moral decision based on religion and values than a state/federal issue. In the end of the day, no one can control or regulate what happens behind close doors. So if you want to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, which in turn will reduce the number of people that want abortions, teach the kids everything there is to know about protection during sex and that little thing called morning after pill. But I'm sure she has bigger plans for our kids education.
*For example she will relocalize the money assigned to explicit sex-ed programs to gun-safety education for children. Because it makes a lot of sense to own and learn how to use a gun in case of confrontation. I think it makes more sense to not give people guns so you never get confronted by someone that has one and need to know how to use it.
*She's against pretty much all gay rights. Again, a position that I think is very personal and based on religion and moral values. I believe sexual discrimination should be unconstitutional (as in a federal issue). Marriage is a legal contract between two people that gives them more rights and privilege that your next door neighbor. Those rights include healthcare, retiree benefits, and even deciding when to turn off the plug at your death bed. And assuming you give your full consent, your legal partner, is the person you want to do this. And lets say you are gay, you live with someone for 50 years but are not allowed to legally marry them. You are at your death bed, someone needs to decide when to turn off the plug. You don't have any brothers and sisters or cousins or relatives. Well, the hospital will keep you alive... and then when you die, the state that didn't allow your marriage in the first place will probably confiscate all the money left on your 401k. And your partner is left with nothing but emptiness. So yes, I believe in equality of rights. But it seems like no candidate really wants to deal with this and get their hands dirty. So,they all opt for giving the state the last say on gay unions. I guess there's more important issues to deal with in the next 4 years. Like the war in Irak.
*"I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq" Yup. That's came out of Palin's mouth shortly after she took office as a governor. Well, you have about a month to catch up on the last 6 years before Biden eats you alive when this comes up at the VP debates.
*Maybe one of those state issues she needs to deal with every day is global warming, since Alaska is one of the places seeing its more dramatic effects.... But despite all the scientific evidence out there... Earlier this year the federal government listed polar bears (we've all seen artic tale) as endangered species Palin threatened to sue them! She also opposes strengthening protection of the beluga whale. Of course all this will interfere with Artic National Wildife Refuge drilling which according to her is essential to achieve our energy independence. I am not exactly sure how producing the oil there will reduce gas prices.

I can't comment on any more of her political positions because there’s hardly any information out there about what she thinks about Russia, Immigration, crime, homeland security, Cuba, Africa, and stem cell research.

Then, I heard Palin speak again at the GOP convention. I was almost able to say the speech with her, as the first half was a carbon copy of what I heard her say a few days earlier, with a few additions here and there. And then she spent the rest of her time trashing Obama, trashing the press, and misguiding the people about what the other party’s political positions.

And then comes the news about how she's under investigation for corruption. The case is about abuse of power.

Today I am enraged. I am so angry that McCain chose Sarah Palin for running mate. I feel that any other republican (even his wife!!!) was more qualified than Sarah Palin for the job. And as a woman I feel ashamed to be represented by Sarah Palin. I am sad that this woman is the one setting the precedent for the rest of us who might one day run for legal office. And after I heard political experts predict that this election will be decided by the uneducated American women, I feel like the Republican Party is using Sarah Palin to prove that women are not capable. I am angry at her because she's lending herself for such a monstrosity and for exposing her family to public ridicule.

Nougatocity

So today has been a specially frustrating day at work. After two years or research I have no real data that I can say its mine, this is what I've been doing, and this is what I conclude from it. My experiments always go wrong. Now, any researcher would say "welcome to my life" or something along those lines. But one thing I have learned in these two years is that I don't have the personality to conform with a life like that. I admire those who do, because it requires a lot of determination and faith. Every unsuccessful experiments takes a toll on your motivation. I feel that I was born with a certain amount of disappointments I could endure and I've used up my quota almost entirely in the past few years. And as the number of disappointments left in me comes to an end, you can only imagine how unmotivated I feel every day when I am about to start an experiment that I am almost certain will fail.

In the highlight of today's frustration I decided to go buy a snicker's bar. I must make a clarification here. I have not bought a snicker's bar in years. In fact I never even eat candy or chocolate bars. When I get hungry I usually eat a hamburger or a plate of rice and beans. I never get hungry for a chocolate bars. And I am way too cheap to go impulse buying snicker's bars. I think the last time I bought one they were still about 55 cents each. Today, this one bar cost me 85 cents.

Anyhow, I'm eating this bar sitting outside, people watching, and coming up with that theory about being born with only a certain number of disappointments in you before you become incredibly unmotivated. Thats when I noticed, as I was finishing the bar, that there was something written inside the wrapper. At first I dismissed it. I thought: 'What if it is a new contests where you get to be in the cover of Entertainment Weekly with Michale Phelps?'. I look at the wrapper again. 'If it is a contest then the wrapper probably says something like "Sorry you lost. Try again next later." Could I take another disappointment? What if I run out of disappointments with this one!'. I decided I should read the wrapper and take on whatever the future had in store for me. And this is what the wrapper said:

I couldn't help but smile. I was in disbelief that such a word could exist. And when I found myself in front of the computer I googled it. Turns out it is a Snicker's campaign. They've been putting up billboards with words they invented themselves around the country. These people really know who goes out and buys their bars, what they are feeling what they want, what they need!

Now that wrapper is next to my computer. I'm not sure if it will motivate me or unmotivated me. But it will always get a good laugh out of me.

Picture of the Week

I found a photo essay in TIME that shows pictures of what's on family dinner tables in fifteen different homes around the globe. It includes a photo of the family in the kitchen, surrounded by all the food they consume in a week, and detail on how much it costs. It is pretty interesting. Below is a picture from a family in Ecuador. I can identify with the food they eat. For them it costs only about $30, for my family in PR a grocery list like this would cost close to $150.If you want to see the complete essay, titled WHat teh World Eats, click here.

Why does Puerto Rico have a voice on this year's Democratic Primaries???

Today I posted an article from the New York Times in my blog Good News from PR that gives a somewhat objective explanation about Puerto Rico's ambiguous relationship with the United States.

Analysis of an Issue

The study of how a company's stock has performed in the past is an utterly useless exercise because previous performance has no bearing on future success or failure.
--

I disagree that the study of how a company's stock has performed in the past is an utterly useless exercise. As a matter of fact, previous stock performance may be the only indicator that an investor has in order to determine if he or she will buy a share at a certain company. Sometimes, however, stock prices deceivingly portray future performance.

Success or failure of a company is influenced by factors such as the status of the pipeline and business strategies. In Science Business, Gary Pisano gives the example a big pharmaceutical company developing a new drug to cure cancer, that announces at a press conference the beginning of Phase II trials for the drug. This announcement is bound to raise stock prices since a drug that reaches phase II trials has higher probability to advanced downward into commercialization. However, the company already knows that the new cancer drug will fail in further clinical trials. Its announcement to advance further into clinical research is a business strategy to raise capital that will allow them to begin new research with a different compound. A big pharmaceutical company has the recognition and capital to make a risky move like this. A start up company in this position however, would not have been able to announce the beginning of new clinical trials for a drug that they know is destined to fail. As a result, stock prices would sink and the company will probably cease to exist regardless of its competence to develop a new breakthrough drug.

I have shared with you one way in which stock prices can be manipulated to inaccurately represent the future success of a company. It is the investor's responsibility to get informed beyond share prices, using resources like the company's Annual Report to get information about pipeline status and business strategies, before choosing where to buy stock.

GMAT

I've been studying hard for the GMAT for the last couple of weeks. The big day is June 17th. Aside from Math and Verbal sections, the test involves two essays: an analysis of an issue and an analysis of an argument. The analysis of an issue essays consist on stating if I agree or disagree with a certain topic and supporting my point of view with experiences, observations, or readings. The analysis of an argument essay is about evaluating how well an argument is written. Each essay must be written in only 30 minutes.

I've decided to post here my progress with the writing. My goal is to write at least two essays per week for the next month. Feel free to share with me your thoughts and comments. Mostly I am looking to improve how well I organize my ideas while keeping things interesting and concise.

Picture of the Week

I know I just posted an image last night.. but today I cannot resist to share this image from the blog 3191. Steph and Mav live 3191 miles apart. They've never met. Last year they started the 3191 blog, where they each posted a picture taken in the morning. This year they post pictures taken at night. I am always impressed by the parallelisms between the images. And this is one, posted last night, is one of my favorites. Seems like I have a small obsession with lines in photography. I had the great experience of interviewing both of them for my photography class last year. Check out the transcript of that interview here.

Picture of the Week

While I was very tempted to use this picture of Miley Cirus and comment on how the "gossip pages have taken yet another a huge step towards ensuring that the South Park 'Sacrificial Celebrity Theory' comes true in real life." The girl even had to cancel a charity event to avoid the media attention! "Sorry this country is insane" (ok, i took all that form Best Week Ever. Subscribe to their blog, it is hilarious.)

Anyway, this week I was very impressed again by Sam Javanrough and a pair of pictures he posted on his blog daily dose of imagry: a panoramic view of Dundas Square in Toronto. Enjoy.

The interactive panorama can be viewed at viewAt.
